Overview
Every basketball player dreams of draining a 3-point shot at the buzzer to win a game, but that won't happen without many hours of practice. Working on proper form--not just shooting thousands of shots--will go a long way in making your shot better. When you can consistently shoot a good shot with the proper form, you'll see your shooting percentage rise and you may even sink that game-winner.
Step 1
Eye the basket. Before you start your shooting motion, focus on the target--the rim--and maintain the focus all the way through the follow-through of your shot.
Step 2
Master the proper stance. Your feet should be about shoulder-width apart. Stagger your feet slightly with the foot on your shooting-hand side slightly in front of the other foot. Point your feet toward the basket.
Step 3
Grip the ball properly. Place your finger tips right below one of the long seams on the basketball. You may not have time to do this during a game, but while practicing, this will allow you to watch the backspin on the ball as it travels toward the goal. Spread your fingers so that the ball is balanced comfortably in your hand. The ball should not touch your palm; rather,. it should be sitting on your fingertips. Keep your off-hand on the side of the ball and don't allow it to influence the shot in any way; it is there for balance only.
Step 4
Practice shooting with the proper motion. Start with the ball slightly above your waist and move it straight up over your head, but not behind it. Your shooting arm should form an "L" at this point. Simultaneously, bend your knees to prepare for the jump part of the jump shot.
Step 5
Let the shot fly. Release your shot right before you come to the top of your jump, extending your shooting arm and hand directly at the rim.
Step 6
Complete the shot with a good follow-through. Your hand and wrist should be relaxed and pointing at the rim. Your arm should be fully extended and you should keep it extended until the shot goes in.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Pay close attention to the backspin on the ball as you practice your shooting.
If the basketball is not spinning properly, something is wrong with your grip or shooting motion.
