Shooting a basketball in an effort to score points may prove to be tricky without the proper guidance. However, with proper instruction, it may be easier than you'd think. Follow these instructions, and you'll be ready to become a point-scoring machine.

Position the basketball properly in your hands, holding it up towards the hoop at a 60 degree angle. Hold the ball from the bottom with your right hand, placing your left hand on the middle of the left side to stabilize the ball so it doesn't fall to either side (if you are right handed, vise versa). Spread your fingers for increased grip on the ball.

Step 3

Bend your knees at no more than a 45-degree angle, and spring upwards to add energy to your throw. Vary the amount of energy to match the distance from the hoop.

Step 4

While springing upwards, push the ball from your dominant hand towards the hoop, using your other hand only for guidance. Vary the amount of arm strength you use to propel the ball towards the hoop to match the distance form the hoop. While throwing, move your dominant hand in a forward sweeping motion so it completes about a 90 degree angle and the ball rolls off your fingers, thereby simultaneously guiding the ball towards the hoop and adding backspin to it.

Step 5

Always follow up your shot in case a rebound occurs. If you get the ball again, you may have another chance to shoot.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : Practice makes perfect, so to perfect your shot; train as much as possible. Try shooting from different distances and angles from the hoop so that when game time comes around, you're ready to score from anywhere. Train shooting not only from a dead stop, but while while dribbling, as well. Experiment with hitting the backboard and getting the ball to hit the board and bounce into the net.
  • WARNING : Before playing, stretch your legs, arms and torso for 15 seconds each so as to avoid pulling or tearing a muscle. Ensure that you are properly hydrated while playing; otherwise, you could face grave, easily avoidable medical complications. Jumping may cause strain on the knees; if you experience pain in the knees when you jump, use a knee brace to prevent this pain, known as Jumper's Knee.
